Summary: Before Dracula hit the big screen, audiences were enraptured with fright by the spindly, freakish visage of Count Orlok in "Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror". Orlok's actor, Max Schreck, was so good at being the monstrous vampire that some people were led to believe that he was actually one himself. But that was just ridiculous...or was it?
History: Before he became one of the greatest silent film directors in history, F.W. Murnau was intent on making his mark in history with a film about a vampire that was basically Dracula but not quite. So, "Nosferatu" was officially in production. But he wanted perfection and authenticity above all else, so he got himself an ACTUAL vampire in the form of the creepy and volatile Max Schreck. But not only is Max a difficult actor to work with, but Murnau's entire crew is being picked off one by one. Not that the director minds...
Notable Kills: Nothing special.
Final Fate: After killing one too many of the film crew, Max is condemned in his final scene to burn alive in the sunlight by the now crazed Murnau.
Powers/Abilities: Immortality.
Weakness: Standard vampire weaknesses, including not being able to cross running water (he needed a plane to circumvent this).
Scariness Factor: 4-While not quite as frightening as he looked in the actual film, he still retains the tall, hideous look that we know Orlok for. At the same time, it's clear that immortality is wearing thin on him, if his backstory of once being a being of high class is anything to go by.
Trivia: -The whole thing about Max being a vampire was just an old myth, as he already had a bit of an acting career before becoming Orlok. That said, he was seen as rather introverted and eccentric at the time.
-This film was originally titled "Burned to Light". But then Max's actor, Wilhelm Dafoe, thought it read "Burn Ed to Life", and it was soundly changed.
